Appraisals of Closely Held Business Interests since 1994

   Who We Are:

Think of us as a highly qualified business valuation service, specializing in tax-driven appraisals needed by owners of private companies operating in Connecticut.  All interviewing and appraisal work are done by the principal of the firm, Peter Becket, ASA, not by a staff of less experienced analysts.  Over his 35-year career Mr. Becket has valued over 500 companies in varied industries and has acquired coveted professional designations that attest to his ability to serve clients well.  We offer a superior work product from an appraisal firm that doesn't have to cover a large overhead expense.

Estate, succession, and corporate planning
Tax appraisals - income, gift, and estate
Promissory notes
Deferred compensation plans

Litigation Support:

Dissenting shareholder lawsuits
Marital dissolutions
Lost profits calculation
Expert witness testimony
Critiquing opposing experts

    Typical Engagement:

Whether we are called upon to appraise the fair market value of a 100% ownership interest in a Subchapter S manufacturing company or a 30% interest in a limited liability company holding real estate and marketable securities, we employ the market and income approaches to ascertain an expected market value of the investment that would provide an appropriate rate of return for an incoming investor.  Generally, on-site visits with management are part of our research and due diligence. We review buy-sell agreements and asset appraisals performed by others.  We do not use canned valuation software—every job is unique and starts from scratch.  Nor do we pad our reports with extraneous data.  We analyze the value drivers and detractors, the marketplace, the competition, and relevant economic factors to arrive at the probable outlook for the company.  Minority interests are discounted in value to reflect the drawbacks of lack of management control and difficulty in finding buyers.  Our comprehensive reports conform to all requirements of regulatory authorities and include ample supporting documentation.  Professional ethics call for non-disclosure of confidential information, and for that reason we do not interview a client company's suppliers or customers.  Appraisal work is a blend of art and science, and includes, as needed, our conferring with the client's accountant and/or lawyer to ensure achieving the client's objective.

    The Appraiser:

Mr. Becket graduated from Yale University in 1963, then served during the Vietnam era as an infantry captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.  After graduating from the Columbia Graduate School of Business with an MBA in marketing and finance, he joined United States Trust Company of New York as a trust and estate administrator and became an officer while working in the bank's closely held business section.  Mr. Becket gained greater valuation expertise through courses offered by two national business appraisal societies.  Specifically, he acquired the Accredited Senior Appraiser ("ASA") designation from the American Society of Appraisers in 1986 and the certified business appraiser ("CBA") designation from The Institute of Business Appraiser, Inc. ("IBA"), in 1990.  (The IBA merged with the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts or "NACVA" in 2012.)  During 1991-1992 he served as the president of the Connecticut Chapter of the ASA.  He worked as an independent contractor for two business appraisal firms before founding Becket Business Appraisals, LLC, in 1994.  He has written and published a 28-page booklet entitled, "An Attorney's Handbook for Business Appraising," and he has spoken at various training seminars.  The IBA awarded Mr. Becket in 1999 with the designation Business Valuator Accredited in Litigation ("BVAL"), and that designation was later changed by NACVA to "MAFF."  Due to excessive membership fees he resigned from NACVA in 2015.  Mr. Becket has testified a dozen times as an expert witness in superior courts throughout Connecticut and in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
